Singapore's air quality shows signs of improvement as haze persists

Air quality in Singapore showed mixed results on Tuesday as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations declined in several monitoring zones, even as the overall pollution index stayed elevated across the city-state.

By early morning, PM2.5 readings had returned to normal levels in three of Singapore's five monitoring regions, signalling a potential turning point in the ongoing haze situation. The improvement suggests dispersion of the hazardous air mass, though residents continued to face unhealthy conditions in the remaining areas.

The broader 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index, which measures multiple air pollutants, remained firmly in the unhealthy band across all five regions at 7am, indicating that overall air quality remained a concern despite the targeted improvement in fine particle concentrations.

The fluctuating readings underscored the dynamic nature of transboundary haze affecting the region, with atmospheric conditions determining the rate and extent of pollutant dispersal. Authorities continued to monitor air quality levels closely, with further improvements potentially dependent on regional wind patterns and fire activities in neighbouring areas.
