Singapore's central region air quality deteriorates to unhealthy levels

Singapore's air quality took a turn for the worse as the Pollutant Standards Index climbed to 102 in the central region, marking a return to unhealthy air conditions after a period of improvement.

The National Environment Agency attributed the deterioration to transboundary haze and regional air pollution patterns affecting the island state. Residents in affected areas, particularly those with respiratory sensitivities, were advised to limit outdoor activities and use protective masks when venturing outside.

Forecasters expect air quality to fluctuate between moderate and unhealthy levels over the coming days as weather patterns continue to influence pollutant dispersion across the region. The NEA said it would continue monitoring air quality conditions and provide regular updates.

Singapore has faced recurring episodes of poor air quality during haze seasons, typically driven by transboundary smoke from land clearing and agricultural burning in neighbouring countries. The city-state maintains one of the world's most comprehensive air quality monitoring networks, with real-time PSI readings available across 48 monitoring stations islandwide.
