Singapore's central region air quality deteriorates to unhealthy levels

The central region of Singapore recorded a Pollutant Standards Index of 102 at 1pm, marking a return to unhealthy air quality levels after earlier improvements. The index, which measures concentrations of ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulate matter, is classified as unhealthy when readings exceed 100.

The deterioration signals renewed pressure on air quality in the central zone, which includes densely populated areas and major commercial districts. Residents in affected areas may experience health effects, particularly among vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

The National Environment Agency has not yet issued specific guidance on the causes of the spike. Air quality in Singapore is frequently influenced by transboundary haze from regional sources, particularly during the dry season when biomass burning in neighbouring countries increases atmospheric pollution levels.

Authorities continue to monitor air quality readings across different regions of Singapore. Members of the public are advised to check real-time PSI updates and take appropriate precautions if air quality deteriorates further.
