Singapore's Yap secures medal at inaugural Asiad virtual taekwondo

Yap's progression through the preliminary rounds at the virtual taekwondo competition ensures he will return home from the Asian Games with at least a bronze medal, marking a significant achievement in the inaugural digital combat sport event at the continental competition.

The Singaporean athlete is scheduled to face Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang of Vietnam in his semi-final encounter on October 2, with the victor advancing to the championship match later the same day.

The introduction of virtual taekwondo at the Asian Games represents an expansion of the Games' sporting programme, embracing digital competition formats alongside traditional athletic events. The virtual format allows athletes from across the region to participate in standardised conditions, regardless of geographical location.

With a medal already assured, Yap will be looking to build on his achievement by progressing through the semi-final stage and claiming a higher honour in the championship bout. The outcome of his match against the Vietnamese competitor will determine his medal colour and whether he can secure a silver or gold finish at the inaugural event.
