Singapore will use its upcoming ASEAN chairmanship to advance deeper integration within the bloc while strengthening partnerships beyond the region, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Tuesday at the Milken Institute Asia Summit.
Balakrishnan outlined the city-state's vision for regional cooperation during a period of heightened geopolitical tension, signalling Singapore's intent to leverage its leadership role to maintain ASEAN's centrality in regional affairs.
The minister also addressed the intensifying strategic rivalry between the United States and China, emphasizing the importance of navigating the competition responsibly. He highlighted the need for ASEAN members to balance relationships with major powers while protecting regional autonomy and stability.
Balakrishnan warned of an emerging challenge posed by rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technologies, particularly the development of increasingly autonomous AI agents. He flagged potential risks these systems could pose to regional security and stability, underscoring the need for greater international dialogue on governance frameworks.
Singapore's chairmanship comes as ASEAN faces mounting external pressures and internal coordination challenges. The city-state's emphasis on integration and partnership reflects efforts to strengthen the bloc's economic resilience and political cohesion during a volatile period in regional relations.
