Singapore tightens construction safety rules after workplace fatalities

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has rolled out enhanced safety protocols across high-risk industries following a spate of workplace fatalities in construction and transport. The crackdown comes as the authority seeks to reverse an upward trend in serious incidents that have claimed seven lives in recent months.

The strengthened enforcement framework introduces significantly higher financial penalties for safety violations, alongside extended stop-work orders that will keep non-compliant sites or operations idle for longer periods. Companies found to have committed serious lapses may also face curbs on their ability to hire foreign workers, a significant measure given the reliance of these sectors on migrant labour.

MOM's initiative reflects growing concern over workplace safety standards in Singapore, where construction and transport remain among the most hazardous employment sectors. The ministry has signalled its intention to shift from reactive responses to a more proactive enforcement stance, with a particular focus on companies with repeated violations.

Industry operators have been urged to conduct immediate safety reviews and implement corrective measures. MOM has indicated that the new approach will be applied consistently across all relevant workplaces, with particular attention to high-risk activities and subcontracting arrangements that have historically shown higher incident rates.
