Singapore to commission hybrid gas-battery power plant by 2029
Singapore is investing 1.2 billion Singapore dollars in a new 670-megawatt power generation facility that combines gas turbine technology with battery storage capabilities. The plant represents a significant step in the city-state's efforts to diversify its energy infrastructure and enhance grid stability.

The hybrid power facility, scheduled to commence operations in 2029, will utilize combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology integrated with battery storage systems. Upon completion, it will rank as Singapore's largest single-unit power generation plant, reflecting the nation's commitment to modernizing its electricity infrastructure.
The 1.2 billion SGD investment (approximately 939 million USD) will support the facility's capacity to generate sufficient electricity for approximately 1.2 million four-room residential apartments annually. This output aligns with Singapore's broader energy diversification strategy as the resource-constrained nation seeks to balance supply reliability with environmental considerations.
The integration of battery storage with gas-fired generation allows operators to address peak demand periods more flexibly while maintaining grid stability. As Singapore continues to phase in renewable energy sources, the facility's hybrid capabilities position it as a critical component of the island's transition toward a more balanced energy portfolio.
The project underscores Singapore's infrastructure investments aimed at sustaining economic growth while managing energy security challenges. With limited space and natural resources, the city-state has increasingly turned to advanced generation technologies to meet rising electricity demand from its manufacturing and service sectors.
