Singapore to expand mental health capacity with IMH redevelopment by 2040

The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) will undergo significant expansion and redevelopment as part of Singapore's strategy to strengthen mental health capacity across the nation. The comprehensive project is expected to be completed by 2040 and will position the facility as a leading mental health institution in the region.

As part of the initiative, IMH will be redesignated as a national specialty centre in 2027 and given a new identity as the National Centre for Mental Health Singapore. This rebranding reflects the facility's enhanced role in providing specialized mental health services and driving innovation in the sector.

The redevelopment comes as Singapore recognizes the growing importance of mental health services to the population. The expanded centre is intended to increase treatment capacity, improve facilities, and support the government's broader mental health agenda. Officials have emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure to meet rising demand for mental health care services.

The project represents a long-term commitment by the government to address mental health needs and establish Singapore as a centre of excellence for mental health treatment, research, and training in Asia-Pacific.
