Singapore's Land Transport Authority will increase the overall supply of Certificates of Entitlement by 1.1% for the three-month period ending January 2027, according to an official announcement. The modest increase reflects a measured approach to managing vehicle population growth and traffic congestion on the island nation's roads. The adjustment comes as authorities continue to calibrate COE quotas based on prevailing economic and transport conditions.
Category B COE supply, which covers mid-sized vehicles and taxis, will see the most significant movement with a 3.3% increase in quota allocation. This expansion suggests authorities anticipate moderate growth in demand for this vehicle category over the coming quarter. In contrast, Category A COE supply, which covers smaller vehicles, will remain unchanged at current levels.
The COE system remains a cornerstone of Singapore's vehicle population management strategy, allowing the government to control congestion and emissions while generating revenue through the auction mechanism. Quarterly COE adjustments typically reflect assessments of road capacity, traffic patterns, and policy objectives. These incremental changes help maintain equilibrium in the vehicle market and ensure sustainable transport outcomes.
Vehicle buyers and the automotive industry will monitor these quota movements closely, as COE prices are directly influenced by supply levels and bidding demand. The January 2027 adjustment continues the government's practice of releasing supply figures well in advance, allowing stakeholders time to plan purchasing decisions accordingly.
