The government will continue its approach of maintaining Singapore's ethnic balance and ensuring citizens remain the dominant population segment, Prime Minister Wong Kwan Yew said in remarks ahead of National Day Rally 2026.
Wong underscored the administration's position that population management remains a critical policy lever for Singapore, a densely populated city-state facing complex demographic pressures. The approach reflects longstanding government strategy to preserve social cohesion by sustaining the existing ethnic composition among the resident population.
Foreign workforce management will also remain a priority, with the government adopting a measured stance on the inflow of migrant workers. The cautious approach aims to balance economic growth requirements against social integration challenges and labour market considerations for local workers.
These commitments form part of the government's broader demographic and economic planning framework as Singapore navigates labour shortages, an ageing population, and pressures to remain competitive in the regional economy. Officials have previously emphasized that sustainable population policies are essential to Singapore's long-term prosperity and social stability.
