Singapore to pilot sea scattering of cremated remains at lower cost

The National Environment Agency (NEA) will introduce a pilot scheme enabling residents to scatter cremated remains at designated locations at sea, marking a new option for end-of-life arrangements in Singapore. The initiative aims to provide families with an additional choice beyond the two existing inland ash scattering gardens currently operated by the agency.

Under the pilot programme, the service fee will be set at S$50 per application, representing a substantial reduction compared to the S$320 charge for scattering at Singapore's inland facilities. The lower cost is intended to make the service more accessible to a wider segment of the population seeking alternative ash scattering options.

The two-year pilot will allow NEA to assess demand for sea-based scattering and gather feedback from users before determining whether to make the service permanent. The scheme reflects evolving attitudes towards death management and cremation practices in Singapore's multicultural society, where ash scattering has become an increasingly common alternative to traditional burial and columbariums.

Families interested in utilising the service will need to apply through NEA, which will manage the logistics of the scattering process at designated maritime locations. The pilot represents the agency's effort to modernise and expand funeral and cremation-related services available to Singapore residents.
