Singapore to subsidise genetic testing for hereditary cancer risks

Singapore is introducing subsidised genetic testing for individuals at risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, with the programme set to commence on December 1. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 2,000 people annually, according to medical professionals overseeing the scheme.

The subsidy programme aims to improve early identification of genetic predispositions within families, enabling individuals to take proactive preventive steps before cancer develops. Doctors involved in the rollout have indicated that earlier detection of hereditary cancer risks could significantly reduce disease burden and improve health outcomes across the population.

Genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, can help identify individuals with substantially elevated lifetime risks of developing breast, ovarian, and other cancers. Armed with this knowledge, at-risk individuals can pursue enhanced surveillance, prophylactic treatments, or lifestyle modifications in consultation with their medical teams.

The subsidised testing programme represents an expansion of Singapore's preventive healthcare strategy, focusing on identifying disease risks before symptoms emerge. By reducing financial barriers to genetic testing, authorities hope to encourage more eligible individuals to pursue screening and enable families to make informed health decisions.
