Singapore urges citizens to exercise caution as Anak Krakatau erupts

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued guidance to citizens in Indonesia following the volcanic eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which is located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. The ministry advised Singaporeans to stay informed of local developments and to limit time spent outdoors where ash and volcanic materials may be present.

The volcanic activity, which commenced late on September 4, has elevated alert levels across the surrounding region. Authorities have recommended that individuals exercise heightened caution, particularly those residing or working in areas downwind of the volcano where ash fall poses potential health and safety risks.

Singaporeans currently in Indonesia are urged to monitor official updates from local authorities and their embassy. The government advised residents to keep emergency contacts readily available and to follow the guidance of Indonesian officials regarding evacuation procedures or movement restrictions that may be implemented in affected areas.

Mont Anak Krakatau, which sits in the strait between Java and Sumatra, has a history of volcanic activity. Singaporeans planning travel to Indonesia are encouraged to check travel advisories and consider postponing non-essential visits to areas near the volcano until conditions stabilise.
