Singapore watchdog uncovers around 100 businesses in fake review probe

Singapore's Consumer and Competition Commission (CCCS) has cracked down on widespread fake review purchasing, uncovering the involvement of around 100 businesses in the scheme. The investigation represents the regulator's most extensive probe into the deceptive practice to date.

The fake reviews were sourced from Reputifly, a digital marketing firm operated by a sole director who supplied the fraudulent content to the businesses. The scheme highlights growing concerns over manipulated online ratings and their impact on consumer trust in digital marketplaces.

In the initial phase of enforcement action, 45 businesses that admitted to purchasing counterfeit reviews from the firm have agreed to take corrective measures. These companies will issue public apologies and commit to removing the fake reviews from their online platforms.

The CCCS action underscores the regulator's determination to maintain fair competition and protect consumers from misleading information. The investigation is ongoing, with further enforcement action expected as the probe progresses. Businesses engaging in such practices face potential breaches of Singapore's Competition Act and may face significant penalties.

The case serves as a reminder to Singapore businesses of their obligations to maintain honest marketing practices and the consequences of attempting to manipulate consumer perception through fraudulent reviews.
