A Singapore woman has been issued parking fines for violations she could not have committed, as she does not own a motor vehicle. The 66-year-old resident received the citations due to a registration discrepancy where another driver's car was incorrectly linked to her particulars.
The erroneous fines were traced to a mistake made by a separate motorist during vehicle registration. This administrative error resulted in the woman being held responsible for parking breaches that occurred when the other vehicle was parked illegally.
Upon investigation, the Housing and Development Board identified the root cause of the mix-up and took responsibility for failing to catch the error in their systems. The board issued a formal apology to the affected resident.
The incident highlights vulnerabilities in the vehicle registration and fine-issuing process. HDB has not publicly detailed measures it will implement to prevent similar cases from recurring, though such administrative errors typically prompt reviews of procedural safeguards.
