Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday threw her weight behind initiatives aimed at supporting farmers in the Rayalaseema region, describing the launch as a historic development for an area long grappling with agricultural challenges. The minister's remarks underscored the government's commitment to addressing the persistent difficulties faced by ryots in the semi-arid zone of Andhra Pradesh.
Sitharaman emphasised that farmers in Rayalaseema, who have historically battled adverse weather conditions, depleting water resources, and market volatility, deserve comprehensive policy support and developmental interventions. The two new initiatives, she said, represented a tangible commitment to improve agricultural sustainability and farmer livelihoods in the region.
The Rayalaseema region, comprising Kadapa, Nellore, and Chittoor districts, has long been identified as a chronically drought-prone area requiring special attention. Agricultural distress in the region has periodically driven migration and economic hardship among farming communities, making targeted interventions a priority for state and central policymakers.
Sitharaman's backing for the farmer-centric schemes reflects the central government's broader push to strengthen agricultural infrastructure and support systems across India's vulnerable farming regions. The initiatives are expected to focus on sustainable cultivation practices, water management, and market linkages for smallholder and marginal farmers in the area.
