Sitharaman-Qatar finance chief meet could accelerate bilateral investment pact talks

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is poised to engage with Qatar's finance leadership during the two-day AIIB annual meeting scheduled in Doha, officials indicated, signalling renewed momentum in long-pending bilateral investment treaty negotiations between the two nations.

The meeting on the sidelines of the multilateral development bank's gathering would provide a formal platform for the two finance ministers to discuss frameworks governing cross-border investment flows, a key mechanism for deepening economic ties between India and Qatar.

Bilateral investment treaties, or BITs, establish legal protections and dispute resolution mechanisms for investors from signatory nations. India and Qatar have been engaged in negotiations on such an accord, though progress has been incremental in recent years.

The AIIB annual meeting traditionally serves as a venue for high-level financial and development discussions among member states. India holds significant stakes in the multilateral institution founded in 2016.

A successful meeting between the two finance ministers could unlock further engagement on trade facilitation, technology partnerships, and investment corridors, areas of mutual interest for both nations amid regional economic shifting.
