Tensions flared in New Delhi district on Saturday as Delhi Police conducted mass detentions of around 1,000 protesters across different areas, resulting in injuries to six security personnel, officials said.
The clashes saw instances of stone-throwing directed at police personnel at multiple locations during the detention operations. All injured officers were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, with authorities saying they are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the injuries.
Suman, a constable with the Pink Force—Delhi's all-women police unit—was among those injured. She sustained a fractured finger while detaining protesters near the Hanuman temple at Connaught Place, where a crowd of 100 to 150 people had gathered. "During the detention process, some women twisted my finger, resulting in a fracture," she told reporters, adding that the protesters involved were subsequently apprehended.
Suman noted the difficulty in identifying specific individuals responsible for the injury given the size of the crowd, though she confirmed the women who caused the fracture were taken into custody. The incident underscores the challenging conditions law enforcement personnel face during large-scale detention operations in crowded public spaces.
