Six Malaysian regions grapple with unhealthy air quality levels

Six areas across Malaysia are currently experiencing unhealthy air quality, with Johor bearing the brunt of the pollution episode, according to the latest air quality data.

In Sarawak, Serian registered an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 152, placing it in the unhealthy category. Sri Aman followed with a reading of 128, indicating moderately unhealthy air conditions in the state.

The API readings classify air quality on a scale where readings above 100 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, while readings exceeding 150 are deemed unhealthy for the general population. Johor's status as the worst-hit state suggests the state's residents may face greater health risks, particularly those with respiratory conditions and the elderly.

The deterioration in air quality across multiple regions underscores ongoing environmental concerns in Malaysia. Authorities typically attribute such spikes to factors including industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, and transboundary haze during certain seasons.
