Six Sabah locations breach unhealthy air quality thresholds

Six locations across Sabah registered unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 8 am on Monday, signalling a significant air quality decline in the state. KK Polytechnic in Kota Kinabalu topped the list with an API measurement of 185, placing it firmly in the unhealthy category that warrants caution among the general population.

The affected areas join a growing list of Malaysian locations grappling with air quality challenges, typically driven by haze from transboundary pollution sources or localised emissions. API readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy, while readings above 200 are deemed very unhealthy or hazardous.

Authorities have not yet issued specific health advisories or activity restrictions related to the elevated readings. Residents in the affected zones, particularly those with respiratory conditions, elderly individuals, and children, are generally advised to limit outdoor activities and wear appropriate protective masks during periods of poor air quality.

Monitoring of air quality levels across Sabah is expected to continue throughout the day as meteorological conditions may influence pollutant dispersion.
