RJ Nichole Ledesma was remembered as a "bagani"—a Hiligaynon term for hero—by those who knew him for his unwavering commitment to environmental advocacy. The tribute underscored his dedication to defending natural resources and community interests during his work as a community journalist.
San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza presided over the recognition ceremony on Saturday, receiving the "Natatanging Gawad" (Outstanding Award) on behalf of Ledesma. "Hakus bagani, that's RJ. A hero's embrace. A hero's hug," Alminaza said while accepting the honor, characterizing the slain journalist's approach to his work.
Ledesma's legacy reflects the critical role that community journalists play in documenting environmental issues and holding accountable those responsible for resource management. The award ceremony demonstrated continued recognition of his contributions to environmental protection efforts in the region.
The honor comes as part of ongoing efforts to commemorate journalists who have faced violence while pursuing their professional duties. Ledesma's work remains a testament to the importance of independent reporting on environmental matters affecting local communities.
