The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has announced plans to develop a dedicated logistics hub at the Port of Colombo, marking a fresh approach to the project after the collapse of a previous joint venture arrangement. The initiative aims to strengthen the port's position as a key regional transhipment hub and improve operational efficiency.

The decision to proceed independently with the logistics hub development comes after the SLPA terminated its earlier partnership agreement. Officials indicated that the new approach would allow for greater control over project implementation and ensure alignment with the authority's strategic objectives for port modernisation.

The proposed logistics hub is expected to include facilities for cargo consolidation, warehousing, and value-added services. The development will cater to growing demand from shipping lines and traders utilising the Port of Colombo, which remains one of South Asia's busiest container terminals.

The SLPA has not disclosed specific timelines or financial details regarding the logistics hub project. However, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance the port's infrastructure and maintain its competitive advantage amid regional port development initiatives.
