The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has initiated a nationwide seminar series titled Yukthiya Wenuwen Nagitimu (Rise Up for Justice) in a show of political mobilisation against the National People's Power (NPP) administration. The campaign was launched in Kalutara with remarks from party General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who levelled serious allegations against the government.
Kariyawasam, a former member of parliament, criticised what he characterised as the systematic weaponisation of state institutions by the NPP administration to target political opponents. The former lawmaker's statements represent an escalation in rhetoric from the SLPP, which has increasingly positioned itself as an opposition force challenging the current government's policies and approach to governance.
The seminar series appears designed to build momentum for the SLPP ahead of potential electoral contests while articulating the party's concerns regarding institutional independence and democratic governance. The move comes amid ongoing political tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties seeking to consolidate their support bases across the country.
The SLPP's campaign reflects broader debates within Sri Lankan politics concerning the balance of power between different institutions and the alleged politicisation of state apparatus. The party's nationwide roadshow is expected to continue as it seeks to expand its message to constituencies beyond the Western Province.
