Refresh rate—the number of times a display updates its image per second—has become a key specification in modern smartphones. The three most common standards are 60Hz, the traditional baseline; 90Hz, an intermediate option gaining popularity; and 120Hz, the latest high-end offering. Each increment delivers progressively smoother visual performance, though the real-world benefits vary depending on usage patterns.

The differences are most apparent during everyday tasks like scrolling through social media feeds, reading web pages, or playing fast-paced games. A 60Hz display refreshes 60 times per second, while 90Hz and 120Hz models refresh 90 and 120 times respectively, creating smoother motion and reduced motion blur. Users transitioning from 60Hz to 90Hz or 120Hz often notice the improvement immediately during casual browsing.

However, higher refresh rates come with trade-offs. Displays with faster refresh cycles consume more power, potentially reducing battery life unless manufacturers employ efficient display technologies. Additionally, the smartphone's processor and graphics capabilities must support these refresh rates to deliver meaningful benefits—older chipsets may not fully utilize a 120Hz display.
