SMBC inks five-year lease for Mumbai BKC office space

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Japan's second-largest bank, has leased approximately 49,820 square feet of office space in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex under a five-year rental agreement valued at around Rs 189 crore.

The lease represents a significant expansion of SMBC's operational footprint in India's financial capital, where the institution maintains a substantial presence serving corporate and institutional clients. The Bandra-Kurla Complex, home to numerous multinational financial institutions and major Indian corporations, remains one of Asia's most sought-after business addresses.

The transaction reflects continued confidence among Japanese financial institutions in India's economic prospects and the stability of Mumbai's financial services sector. Several major Japanese banks have established or expanded their Indian operations in recent years, capitalizing on growing bilateral trade and investment flows between Japan and India.

SMBC's lease commitment to premium office space in BKC aligns with broader trends of foreign financial entities consolidating their Indian operations in high-specification business districts that offer sophisticated infrastructure and regulatory proximity.
