SMRT completes tunnel door inspection after 2025 track incident

SMRT has completed a comprehensive inspection of tunnel doors across its entire rail network in response to a 2025 incident in which a metal layer detached and fell onto the track. The inspection was conducted to identify safety concerns and assess the structural condition of doors, particularly those on the older segments of the MRT system.
The incident prompted the rail operator to accelerate its safety review protocols and assess potential risks posed by ageing infrastructure components. Following the completion of inspections, SMRT identified sections requiring maintenance and renewal works.
In collaboration with the Land Transport Authority, SMRT has initiated renewal programmes focusing on the older MRT lines where doors show signs of deterioration or require upgrading. The works are part of a broader effort to ensure passenger safety and maintain system reliability across Singapore's rail network.
The operator has not disclosed specific timelines for the renewal works, but said the projects would be carried out progressively to minimise disruption to commuters. SMRT emphasized its commitment to maintaining high safety standards across all infrastructure components.
