Social enterprise transforms plastic waste into affordable housing solutions

EcoDom, a social enterprise operating in Mexico, has developed an innovative approach to addressing two critical challenges simultaneously: plastic pollution and inadequate housing. The organisation collects waste plastic and processes it into robust building panels suitable for construction, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials.

Workers employed by the enterprise systematically convert plastic waste into panels through a melting and compression process, creating building components that meet structural requirements for residential construction. The panels offer durability comparable to conventional materials while significantly reducing environmental impact.

The initiative extends economic benefits beyond the manufacturing process. Informal waste collectors in the region gain improved purchasing terms for their collected materials, creating a more equitable supply chain. This arrangement incentivises waste segregation and collection while providing income opportunities for vulnerable populations.
