Social Media Firms Must Prioritize Child Safety, Transparency: Vaishnaw

India's Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has called on social media companies to adopt a more proactive stance on child safety and establish effective channels for resolving public grievances. Speaking on the issue, Vaishnaw stressed that platforms must move beyond reactive measures to implement comprehensive safeguarding mechanisms that protect minors from harmful content and predatory behavior.

The minister highlighted the importance of direct grievance redressal systems, urging social media firms to create accessible pathways through which users can report concerns and receive timely responses. Vaishnaw emphasized that such mechanisms should be transparent, efficient, and capable of addressing complaints without unnecessary delays.

Algorithmic transparency emerged as a key focus area in Vaishnaw's remarks, with the minister pressing platforms to provide greater clarity on how their systems curate and distribute content. He underscored that users and regulators alike need visibility into algorithmic decision-making processes to ensure platforms operate responsibly and do not inadvertently amplify harmful material or exploit user data.

The minister's intervention reflects growing regulatory scrutiny of social media platforms in India, where concerns about their impact on children, misinformation, and data privacy have intensified. The push for proactive measures suggests the government expects companies to demonstrate commitment to these safeguards rather than await formal regulatory mandates.
