KUALA LUMPUR — Police have released social media influencer Eric See-To on bail after questioning him regarding an online post that authorities say contained content mocking a Quranic verse. The Brickfields District Police said See-To, who operates under the handle 'Lim Sian See' on social media platforms, was summoned for investigation under provisions related to religious sensitivity.
The influencer's case has reignited debate over the limits of expression on social media in Malaysia, where religious content is a sensitive matter. Police confirmed that See-To was cooperative during questioning and that the investigation is ongoing.
See-To, who has amassed a significant following online, has not made public statements regarding the allegations. The case reflects growing tensions between content creators and authorities over posts that may be perceived as disrespectful to religious beliefs.
Malaysia's legal framework contains provisions designed to protect religious sentiments, particularly regarding Islam. Such cases have become increasingly common as social media usage expands and enforcement of these provisions intensifies. Authorities have previously warned content creators to exercise caution when posting material that could be deemed offensive to any religion.
