SoftBank launches US$10 billion bond offering to fund OpenAI stake

SoftBank Group Corporation has opened order books for a US$10 billion bond issuance aimed at funding its investment in OpenAI, marking a significant capital-raising exercise by the Tokyo-based conglomerate.

The offering comprises three tranches with staggered maturities. The company is seeking to raise US$1 billion through a 3.5-year bond, US$4.5 billion via a 5.5-year tranche, and an additional US$4.5 billion through a 7.5-year bond, according to market sources.

The move reflects SoftBank's strategic push into artificial intelligence investments, with the OpenAI stake representing a key component of its technology portfolio. The company, led by founder Masayoshi Son, has previously signaled its intention to increase exposure to AI-related ventures amid rapid industry growth.

By accessing debt markets, SoftBank can secure funding at potentially favourable terms while preserving its balance sheet flexibility for other investment opportunities. The bond offering demonstrates investor confidence in the conglomerate's creditworthiness and its ability to manage capital allocation across its diverse business holdings.
