Solar energy overtakes coal as China's dominant power source

Solar power has emerged as China's leading source of electricity generation capacity, marking a significant milestone in the world's largest energy market. By the end of July, installed solar capacity reached 1,286 gigawatts, representing 31.5 per cent of China's total installed power generation capacity and surpassing coal for the first time.

The achievement reflects China's substantial investment in renewable energy infrastructure over recent years. The nation has undertaken massive deployments of solar panels across residential, commercial and utility-scale installations, driven by both environmental concerns and technological advancements that have made solar increasingly cost-competitive.
