Solar irrigation projects to boost rice farming in Ilocos Norte

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has officially turned over three solar-powered irrigation projects designed to strengthen water security for farmers in Piddig, Ilocos Norte. The Bimmanga, Sallaguid, and San Antonio systems represent a significant investment in sustainable agricultural technology for the region.

The three projects will collectively serve approximately 45 hectares of farmland, providing farmers with reliable water access during critical growing seasons. By harnessing solar energy, the systems eliminate dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels, reducing operational costs for agricultural communities in the area.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the NIA to modernize irrigation infrastructure across South and Southeast Asia's farming regions. Officials have indicated that solar-powered systems offer a practical solution for remote agricultural areas where conventional power infrastructure remains limited or costly to maintain.

Farmers in the covered areas are expected to benefit from improved crop yields and reduced production expenses. The projects underscore growing recognition among policymakers that renewable energy solutions can address both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability challenges simultaneously.
