TACLOBAN CITY — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is accelerating deployment of solar-powered irrigation systems and complementary infrastructure across Eastern Visayas as farmers face mounting pressure from El Niño-induced drought conditions.

The agency handed over the Guintigui-an Solar Pump Irrigation Project (SPIP) to 87 farmers in Barangay Guintigui-an, Ormoc, marking a significant step in the region's climate adaptation strategy. The installation represents part of a broader NIA initiative to fortify agricultural output across Eastern Visayas during periods of water scarcity.

Solar-powered systems offer regional farmers a sustainable alternative to diesel-dependent irrigation, reducing operational costs while providing reliable water access during extended dry seasons. The technology has gained traction in vulnerable agricultural communities seeking to buffer against climate-related production losses.

The expansion of such projects reflects growing recognition that infrastructure investments targeting climate resilience are essential for protecting the livelihoods of farming communities in areas prone to severe weather variability. Eastern Visayas, frequently affected by typhoons and drought cycles, stands to benefit significantly from enhanced irrigation capacity powered by renewable energy sources.
