The Philippine Rice Research Institute in Batac, Ilocos Norte, is promoting a mobile solar-powered irrigation system designed to help local farmers manage rising operational expenses and combat water shortages intensified by El Niño weather patterns.

The technology was featured during the Lakbay Palay 2026 roadshow held in Batac on October 8, where institute officials demonstrated how the system could benefit farming communities across the region. The initiative addresses growing concerns among rice farmers struggling with limited water availability during dry seasons.

By shifting to solar-powered irrigation, farmers could significantly reduce their reliance on diesel-powered pumps and lower overall production costs. The portable nature of the system allows it to be deployed across multiple farms, making it an accessible solution for smallholder farmers in the region.

The roadshow is part of broader efforts to help agricultural communities adapt to climate challenges while improving productivity and sustainability. The institute has indicated it will continue supporting farmers in adopting the technology to enhance water resource management during periods of water stress.
