Solar-powered aeration systems to aid bangus farmers amid El Niño threat

CALASIAO, Pangasinan — Facing mounting challenges from the super El Niño phenomenon, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is moving toward wider adoption of renewable energy solutions in aquaculture operations across the region.

The agency is developing solar-powered aeration systems designed to serve both fish cages and pond-based farming operations. These installations would harness solar energy to maintain adequate oxygen levels in water bodies, a critical concern during prolonged dry spells when water levels drop and natural aeration becomes inadequate.

Officials characterize the project as still being in advanced planning stages but expressed confidence in its potential to provide substantial relief to bangus farmers. The technology is expected to prove particularly valuable during El Niño episodes, when water scarcity and elevated temperatures threaten aquaculture production throughout the region.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience in Philippine fisheries while reducing operational costs for farming communities. Solar-powered systems would eliminate reliance on diesel-powered aerators, offering both economic and environmental advantages for small and medium-scale producers.
