Somali pirates seize Iranian fishing vessel with 23 crew members

The fishing vessel Ajini was seized by pirates operating off northeastern Somalia, between the coastal towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun, according to maritime security reports. The hijacking marks the latest incident in a resurgence of piracy affecting commercial and fishing vessels in the strategically important shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.

The 23 personnel aboard the Ajini at the time of seizure included 21 Iranian nationals and two Somali security guards hired to protect the vessel. Details regarding the current condition and whereabouts of the crew remain unclear, though maritime authorities have been notified of the incident.

Somali piracy, which peaked in the early 2010s, has experienced renewed activity in recent years despite international naval patrols and enhanced security measures aboard merchant vessels. Fishing boats and smaller commercial ships remain particularly vulnerable to attacks by armed gangs operating from remote coastal bases in Somalia.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in the region and the risks faced by fishing operations in contested waters off the Horn of Africa. International maritime agencies continue to advise vessels transiting the area to exercise heightened vigilance and implement recommended security protocols.
