Son Heung-min etched his name into South Korean football history when his sixth-minute free kick against Uzbekistan propelled him past Cha Bum-kun as the nation's all-time leading international goalscorer. Oh Se-hun added a second goal an hour into the match as South Korea secured a comfortable 2-0 victory at Mireu Stadium in Yongin, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Seoul.
The 34-year-old forward, who recently completed a move to Los Angeles FC after a decade-long stint with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, has established himself as one of Asia's finest footballers. Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, Son holds the distinction of being South Korea's most-capped player with 151 international appearances since making his debut in 2010, during which time he has featured in four FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The friendly victory marked a turnaround for interim coach Robert Moreno's squad following a mixed international break. South Korea had previously defeated Ecuador 3-0 and drawn goalless with Venezuela, but suffered a 4-1 defeat to Uruguay during the same period. Both South Korea and Uzbekistan are now directing their focus toward the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which will commence in Saudi Arabia on January 7, 2027.
