South Carolina county secures vast forest lands to block developer plans

Georgetown County has finalized the purchase of 4,148 acres in Carvers Bay, which will be converted into a state forest, marking a significant victory for conservation efforts in the region. County officials also announced plans to protect an additional expansive parcel on Waccamaw Neck, bringing the total protected land to approximately 8,000 acres.

The acquisition represents a strategic decision by county leadership to prioritize long-term environmental stewardship over immediate financial gains.
