KORONADAL CITY — South Cotabato province has ramped up preparations for an anticipated severe El Niño weather pattern, with water infrastructure, disaster response budgets, and relief stockpiles positioned for deployment, provincial officials said.

Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. underscored the province's proactive stance, noting that advance planning efforts are underway to address potential disruptions from extended dry conditions expected to sweep the region. The province has prioritized securing adequate water supplies and ensuring disaster management resources are fully operational ahead of the dry season.

Farmers and livestock operators across South Cotabato face particular vulnerability to prolonged drought conditions that could reduce yields and threaten animal herds. Public health officials have also flagged concerns about water-borne disease risks and heat-related illnesses during extended dry periods.

The province's preparation strategy includes stockpiling emergency relief goods, maintaining water distribution systems, and ensuring rapid-response capabilities for communities most vulnerable to El Niño's effects. Local government units have been directed to coordinate contingency plans with provincial disaster management offices.
