South Korea faces accommodation crunch ahead of Asian Games

South Korean authorities have acknowledged a critical accommodation shortfall as the Asian Games approach, with organisers scrambling to find lodging for more than 17,000 athletes competing in the regional sporting event.

To address the housing crisis and manage costs, games officials have deployed an array of makeshift solutions beyond traditional athlete villages. These include a cruise ship anchored to provide floating accommodation, temporary wooden container structures, and overflow arrangements in local hotels across the host region.

The decision to utilise such unconventional facilities reflects organisers' efforts to balance the enormous logistical demands of the Games with budgetary constraints. Rather than constructing permanent new facilities, the approach relies on renting existing infrastructure and temporary installations that can be dismantled after the event concludes.

The accommodation challenges underscore broader planning pressures faced by host nations staging the Asian Games, one of the world's largest multi-sport events. Despite the housing difficulties, organisers have indicated that all athletes will be adequately accommodated for the duration of the competition.
