South Korea heightens surveillance of North Korea border incursions

South Korea said it is closely monitoring incursions along the heavily fortified border with North Korea, maintaining elevated readiness across its armed forces. The move follows reports that North Korean troops crossed the military demarcation line more than 20 times during August, marking a notable uptick in border activity.

The repeated crossings represent a concerning pattern of provocative behaviour by Pyongyang, prompting South Korea to strengthen surveillance capabilities and military preparedness in the region. Officials emphasised that the country is prepared to respond swiftly to any further violations or security threats along the border.

The Korean peninsula remains one of the world's most heavily militarised zones, with an estimated two million troops stationed along the demarcation line that has divided North and South Korea since the 1953 armistice. Border incursions and provocative military manoeuvres have periodically escalated tensions between the neighbouring states, drawing international concern and diplomatic efforts to maintain stability.
