South Korea Reaffirms Defense Drills Are Defensive Amid US Pullback

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has moved to defuse tensions over defence operations, asserting that annual civil-defence exercises conducted by Seoul are purely defensive in nature and carry no intention to provoke Pyongyang. The clarification comes after US President Trump instructed the Pentagon to substantially scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, a move that has prompted reassessment of regional security posture.

Lee emphasised that the drills, which typically occur alongside joint US-South Korea military operations, are routine exercises designed to test civilian readiness and emergency response capabilities. The South Korean president stressed that these measures are consistent with Seoul's commitment to maintaining peace on the Korean peninsula while ensuring its population is prepared for contingencies.

Despite the reduction in coordinated US-South Korean military drills, Seoul has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening independent defence capabilities. Lee underscored that South Korea will continue to invest in and develop its own military and civil-defence infrastructure, reducing reliance on external support while maintaining its longstanding alliance with Washington.

The move reflects a broader strategic recalibration in Northeast Asia as the Trump administration signals a shift in its approach to military commitments in the region. South Korea's emphasis on autonomous defence development signals Seoul's determination to bolster its security posture regardless of fluctuations in external military cooperation.
