South Korea Receives First Homegrown KF-21 Boramae Fighter Jet

South Korea formally received its inaugural KF-21 Boramae fighter jet, cementing the nation's position as a developer of advanced military aviation technology. The aircraft represents a major achievement in Seoul's efforts to build self-reliant defence capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign fighter platforms.

The KF-21 is classified as a 4.5-generation multi-role combat aircraft, positioning it among contemporary fighter jets in use globally. Designed and developed domestically with international collaboration, the platform is equipped to perform a range of operational roles including air-to-air combat, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions.

South Korea's defence ministry has charted an ambitious acquisition roadmap for the Boramae programme. The country plans to induct more than 100 aircraft across its air force by the early 2030s, effectively modernising its fighter fleet and phasing out legacy variants that have served for decades.

The delivery of the first production aircraft follows successful completion of development and testing phases. The KF-21 programme underscores South Korea's growing technological capabilities in aerospace and defence manufacturing, with potential implications for regional military balances in East Asia.
