South Korea's October exports surge on artificial intelligence investment wave

South Korea's export sector demonstrated considerable strength in October, with overseas shipments nearly doubling year-on-year as global demand for artificial intelligence technologies continued to accelerate. The country's manufacturing and technology sectors capitalized on the worldwide push toward AI adoption, driving substantial increases in semiconductor and electronics exports.

Analysts attributed part of the monthly expansion to structural calendar factors. October 2024 contained more working days than October 2023 due to differing dates for the Chuseok holiday, South Korea's major lunar new year celebration. This variation in the holiday calendar contributed to extended production schedules and increased export opportunities during the month.

The performance highlights South Korea's strategic positioning in the global AI boom, where domestic companies including semiconductor manufacturers have emerged as critical suppliers to international technology firms developing artificial intelligence applications. The country's technology sector has increasingly benefited from reshoring trends and supply chain diversification among Western companies seeking alternatives to concentrate manufacturing in single regions.

Economists noted that sustained export momentum would be crucial for South Korea's economic outlook, as external demand remains a significant driver of growth for the export-dependent nation. The October figures suggest that AI-related demand may provide a durable tailwind for Korean manufacturers in coming months, though global economic uncertainties continue to present risks to the sector's trajectory.
