South Korea said it will reduce its diplomatic presence in Ukraine, citing a row with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over his public disclosure of two North Korean prisoners of war being transferred to Seoul. The decision to withdraw certain embassy personnel represents a significant strain in relations between the two countries, which have maintained close ties amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The dispute centres on Zelensky's announcement regarding the transfer of the North Korean military personnel, which Seoul has indicated violated confidentiality agreements and compromised sensitive diplomatic negotiations. South Korean officials expressed concern that the public disclosure undermined ongoing efforts to manage sensitive matters with Pyongyang.
The withdrawal of embassy staff is expected to impact South Korea's diplomatic operations in Ukraine, though Seoul indicated it would maintain a minimal presence to handle essential matters. The move comes as South Korea has been a significant supporter of Ukraine's defence efforts against Russian aggression.
Diplomats from both nations have not ruled out further discussions to resolve the standoff. The incident underscores the complexities facing countries attempting to balance their support for Ukraine with their own strategic interests in the region, particularly regarding North Korea.
