South Korea utility seeks $18 billion advance payment from Samsung

South Korea's state-run utility has ramped up pressure on major semiconductor manufacturers to secure advance payments for power supply, signalling growing concerns over industrial electricity demand in the region.

The utility proposed that Samsung Electronics commit to an advance payment of $18 billion, according to reports of the proposal. The move reflects heightened efforts to secure long-term funding for power infrastructure as demand from energy-intensive chip manufacturing continues to surge.

SK Hynix, another major semiconductor producer in South Korea, faces a separate proposal to pay 5 trillion won, equivalent to approximately S$4.67 billion, in advance for future power supply agreements.

The proposals underscore the critical role that semiconductor manufacturers play in South Korea's electricity grid, as companies like Samsung and SK Hynix expand production capacity to meet global demand for chips. Advance payments would help utilities finance infrastructure upgrades and secure energy supplies for major industrial consumers.
