South Korean court orders North Korea to pay $32.5 million for 2020 office destruction

A South Korean court has ordered North Korea to pay $32.5 million in damages for demolishing the Inter-Korean Liaison Office in June 2020, according to court documents released this week.

The Kaesong-based liaison office, which served as a key communication channel between Seoul and Pyongyang, was destroyed during a period of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The attack followed weeks of diplomatic friction between the two nations.

The judgment, handed down by a Seoul court, represents one of the few instances in which a South Korean tribunal has issued a financial ruling against North Korea. While enforcement of the order remains uncertain given the absence of diplomatic relations and international sanctions against Pyongyang, the decision underscores Seoul's legal position regarding the destruction of state property.

The liaison office had operated since 2018 as part of earlier inter-Korean diplomatic efforts. Its destruction symbolized the deterioration of relations during that period and marked a significant setback for engagement initiatives between the two countries.
