South Korean firm pays record transit fee at drought-hit Panama Canal

The South Korean energy company secured priority transit for the G. Spirit through an exceptional premium payment, underscoring the mounting commercial pressures facing one of the world's most vital shipping routes. The vessel, carrying liquefied petroleum gas, obtained early passage ahead of the standard queue that has accumulated due to reduced canal capacity.

The canal's operator has significantly curtailed daily transits from an average of 38 to around 24 vessels per day, a consequence of depleted freshwater reserves triggered by El Niño weather patterns. These conditions have lowered water levels in the Gatun Lake, which supplies the water necessary to operate the canal's lock system.

The record payment reflects the acute supply pressures facing global energy markets and the willingness of major shippers to absorb extraordinary costs to maintain schedules. The canal handles approximately five per cent of global maritime trade, making any disruptions to its operations a significant concern for international commerce.

Authorities have implemented water conservation measures and expedited dredging operations in attempts to mitigate the crisis. Analysts expect congestion and premium transit fees to persist until rainfall patterns normalise, potentially lasting several more months depending on weather forecasts.
