LUCENA CITY — The southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, has affected more than 305,000 families across the Calabarzon region since the first week of August, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The DSWD reported on Sunday that 305,959 families from 965 barangays in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces have been impacted by the seasonal rains. The figure represents a significant uptick in displacement as the monsoon season persists through late August.
The habagat typically brings heavy precipitation to western portions of the Philippines, creating hazardous conditions in low-lying areas and mountainous communities prone to flooding and landslides. The widespread impact across the Calabarzon provinces underscores the vulnerability of densely populated areas in the region to seasonal weather patterns.
Local government units and disaster response agencies have been mobilized to provide assistance to affected residents, including shelter, food, and medical support. The DSWD continues to monitor conditions as the southwest monsoon remains active over the region.
