CALAPAN CITY — The southwest monsoon has wreaked significant damage across Oriental Mindoro, with provincial authorities reporting agricultural losses exceeding P112 million and impacts on 52,642 individuals, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The sustained rainfall associated with the habagat system triggered widespread crop damage and disrupted livelihoods throughout the province. The PDRRMO documented the extent of the disaster, which affected farming communities across multiple municipalities.
Oriental Mindoro's agricultural sector, vital to the provincial economy, bore the brunt of the monsoon's impact. Farmers reported losses to rice paddies, vegetable crops, and other produce as floodwaters inundated low-lying agricultural areas.
The disaster office's assessment, submitted on Monday, underscores the vulnerability of farming communities to seasonal weather patterns. Provincial officials have begun evaluating assistance measures to support affected residents and expedite recovery efforts in the agricultural sector.
